Wing Chun - superior blocking

This took place at windy city's wing chun 5th annual seminar. I take no credit at all, as my Sifu just showed some superior blocking skills. If you know what to look for you can see tons of different concepts being applied. The 1st thing to notice is that a skilled practioner really just blocks the majority of the time, the unskilled, tries to cover that up by simply blizting the attack. Its very common in the wing chun world for many to do that. Also, what how blocks come about, its not done by the hand but by the body. You can visually see this since sifu's center stays consistent throughout, and simply turns in conjunction with the amount of force, while the hands don't chase out which is a common no no in wing chun. Let the attacks come to your house, and the closer they are the safer it is for you. All to often, people will shoot out their hands trying to reach out to block. Blocking is a simple concept but difficult to do, know the person's centerline, have your triangle constantly point to that indivudals center line, and go with the force. While there are many more concepts involved these are the general three which one must follow to develop superior blocking skills. Finally in some glimpses you see freezing out motions, where you can literally lock out your opponents motions, by simply holding your structure and techincally freezing his hand motion. All to often wing chun is confused with the concept of sticky hands. Sticky hands is not about sticking to people, its making people stick to you. Out in the street, people will not do sticky hands in a real fight, what your developing is the ability so that people will stick to your hands. In a simple concept imagine your hands as blades, if you position your blades in the right angle, whatever touches it will cut into it, thus forcing that individual to stick. Anyway, if you want to get good in wing chun, practice blocking more then attacking. If you can block anything thrown at you, you can then attack at will.

WT is good. Bruce Lee used to WT too. But too much muscles won't you good either. Too much bulk will slow you down and hinder your flexibility. You don't need that much muscles to deliver a punch strong enough to K.O a person or deliver a solar plexus blow powerful enough to knock the wind out of a guy. So do WT. But keep only enough muscles to maximize your abilities. More than that is a waste unless you manage to get the opponent within your grasp.

no one style is better than another. Some styles naturally are better at overcoming other MA. MMA fighters train specifically for the situation they know they will be in and they're damn good at it...can they defeat anyone in any situation? No but they're hard men physically strong and fit and that gives anyone a good chance. The skill of the fighter is far more important than the MA they practice. Master Fong's teaching is wasted on Hgamer here. This is a particularly bad demo of WC.

I think what really goes on your nerves are these WC-guys who proudly shout in all winds that their MA is the best, the fastest, the whatsoever of all. That's bullshit, it's a cool MA, that's true, but you never should confuse your fighting ability and your stile. And some WT-guys are ignorant, they consider strengh training as waste. I train WT because to me it has proven to be effective in situations I tend to get. I'll shurely practice another MA in some years, to get the best out of them.

Well, everybody has had his experience, like I said. I just can repeat, that in those fights I had on the street the WT-stuff proved as quite useful. I don't know how training is in other styles, though. And usually we also do sparring in my school. How do you think, the gain on fighting skill you get from WT can be disproven? I saw that one UFC fight where a WC-guy gets beat up. Well, that's one person. A stupid one. I also saw a couple of fights where boxers got beat up.

Your opinion is very wrong, stupid and ignorant. Bruce later said WC was shit by the way.
wilsonhsu (October 6, 2008 at 1:57 am)
you do know that bruce lee used this "patty cake shit" to kick ass right? and i'm pretty sure he would kick any of the MMA fighters' asses, just my opinion
kommisar (October 5, 2008 at 8:23 pm)
Then you have these little cocksuckers, most of whom don't even do an MA, talking about how unrealistic MMA is and how realistic their TMA, never-spar, "deadly" bullshit is. It's insane. This isn't a matter of opinion like what's more fun. Telling me this patty cake shit helps one fight can be easily disproven. I'm not here to get people to like what I like. I'm here to call them on their lies. NONE of these pussies would last in an MMA fight. What does that tell you?
kommisar (October 5, 2008 at 8:21 pm)
Believe me, I like many others started out in TMA, so it's not like I'm so hothead who's jumping on the bandwagon. The problem with this is people teach others these techniques and principles which don't work. They say they work, take their money and have the student waste their time doing it all. If you paid me to teach you how to fix cars you'd want to be able to fix cars relatively competently afterwards, right? It's like that in fighting and MA. These people go around selling bullshit
