There are 3 requirements for scoring:
1) Hit a valid target (head from top, wrist, side of torso, for experienced fighters also forward thrust to the throat).
2) When hitting, stomp with the front foot.
3) when hitting shout out, often attackers shout out the target (head, wrist etc.) in japanese.
All three actions together need practice and are meant to demonstrate determination, representing the unity of soul, sword and body... :)
The man in white is a grand master, very few reach 9th dan.

no ive been doing kendo for 2-3 years and im 1 keup. the ways of scoring r head, wrist, and hips. first of all just rushing and hitting will get you no where but opening a spot for your opponent. there are different ways to attack. For example im a defense/counter attack type of person(although my master doesnt like defense) and i like to fake my movements. i especially like attacking wrist because its usually open and is always painful.

How do you score in kendo? I'm really new to this but it's really interesting. Are strikes to the head the only way of scoring?

Ya would think so post -hoboguru- yet for fun, get two sticks of bamboo and a not so timid training partner. It's amazing the way the mind will react to even a stick. Younger people tend to have 'stick fights' with reckless abandon, but alot of folks as they get older grow this almost innate need to protect themselves. Even a stick (provided you don't have armor to don on) can cause the body to freeze up. The trick is to maintain the speed of youth with the mindset of the aged people.
