Yes it is a shame to retire a legend, but the only primary aircraft that are going to be used is the F/22 raptor and the F/35 JSF. The F/A-18 will soon be retired because it is on its 3rd generation of tech. The F-117 stealth fighter has been retired as of this year as well.

Isn't the F-14D Super Tomcat supposed to remain in fleet service until 2020? I know the F/A-18F Super Hornet will be the fleets primary Attack and Air Superiority Fighter for some time to come and it was to replace the F-14A on that level. But isnt the SuperTomcat supposed to continue on as a Fleet Defense Interceptor with limited ground attach capability? It would be a shame to retire such a legend so soon.

The F-14 is equal to the F-18 in every way...I was in the Navy for 9 years and for those 9 years 7 was spent flying the tomcat...and it has a long range, more power and pretty light on it's feet...Don't let some of these guys fool you on here...Very few people can say they've flow the tomcat. But i can.

...By its pilots of course. And if fixed wings are so good, why produce swept wings first place? Because they produce less drag when traveling at high speeds and more lift when taking off or landing.

By who? The Iranian State TV? King of the skies, my ass. Swing wings are a dead end, why do you think no new fighter has been designed with them since the 70's? Because every aircraft designer and actual military knows the weight and maintenance penalty they aren't worth the benefits, which are had with a fixed wing with huge lift devices, like the F-18.
TaaviTheCorrupted (August 10, 2008 at 2:49 pm)
Not quite. F-14 was considered the king of the skies... Due to it's extreme maneuverability. Only F-18's version that can match that is Super Hornet, E/F, F-14's replacement. Though the 14 is heavier. It's swept-wings clearly give it the edge. And a little correction of mistake: F-14 was originally designed to be a maritime superiority fighter.

I always thought that the F14 was known better as an interceptor.... it actually isn't as agile as an F/A-18 because of its size and weight but it makes up for it by having those h4x phoenix missiles for shooting down bombers before they knew what was coming.
PrinzEugn (August 10, 2008 at 4:10 am)
The F-14 is not more maneuverable than an F-18- the F-18 is smaller, lighter, has a lower wing loading and has higher turn rates. The F-14 is fairly maneuverable but is too heavy and doesn't have enough power to compensate. The F-18 is an extremely maneuverable and the F-14 doesn't compare no matter how much hope the legions of F-14 fanboys would like to hope it does. The F-14 had good and bad qualities, but it is not the greatest thing ever even though some people treat it as such.
