I've never read his stuff. I'll look into it.
I'd just rather see a book come out with the blessing of Christopher Tolkien (I'm assuming he is the trustee of his father's work)that the movie can be based on, rather than an original screenplay. That said, I'll probably see the movie anyway, but its kind of like Yes touring with a tribute band singer (a controversy of another sort on Youtube).

There is alot of source material which Tolkien wrote that refers to events between The Hobbit and LOTR. But there's no cohesive story. I would love to see a story about the last Alliance and the fall of Sauron, but that happens way before the events in "The Hobbit"

So many people are concerned that it won't "match" with the trilogy. But, the Weta team is doing production design, and Del Toro may tweak some things and I'm sure he'll have some fun with Smaug, and the Battle of Five Armies, but I doubt he'd make something that looked like a completely different universe.

guy gavriel kay...? he helped c tolkien put together 'the silmarillion' and has done some fantastic stuff of his own..try the fionavar trilogy first....i was very dismissive of it for ages because, after reading the blurbs on the back of each novel, i thought it was quite juvenile and derivative....after reading it though....emotion, death, redemption, rape, loss, you name it, its in there.

i ONLY pray IT DOESN'T GET BUTCHERED I LOVE ALL these movies....The animated Hobbit and the Trilogy....But if it turned out good....WOW...what a GREAT "symphony" of movies it would be!!!

That would be difficult, but there is a lot of material there that could be made into one or more movies. It could be quite spectacular if they did it right.

Just my opinion, but a sequel to The Hobbit should not be left up to a movie screenwriter. It should come out in literary form first, and since Tolkien didn't write it himself, perhaps a respected fantasy writer intimate with Tolkien's work could do it, closely monitored and edited by Christopher Tolkien.

I liked Pan's Labarynth imagine a screen filled with creatures like the faun :D I like the fact that they've got artisitic liscence to show things like the White Council fighting Sauron in Mirkwood, apparently Sir Ian Mckellum has secured the role of Gandalf, saw him as King Lear the other year and he was amazzing. |
