It's actually a tv mini series that was on television a few years ago. It's called "into the west".It did get put onto dvd though, so with a bit of looking you may be able to find it.

This is beautiful. I've just rediscovered Kate Wolf through Nanci Griffith through Iris Dement. I saw Kate perform years and years ago and fell in love with her music. So sad that she died so young.
