I like this film better with the realism than the original tale. I've seen this old film of the original tale of Tristan and Isolde and I didn't get it for some reason. When I saw this version I understand it completely.

you should read gottfried von strassburgs tristan :) the potion shouldn't be taken litterally if you ask me, it's more of a metaphoric way of showing the strength and indistructability of their love

The filmmakers wanted to keep this film grounded in reality so there is no love potion or magic in the film.
There is enough descrepancy in the original story (it was originally a minstral's tale with each minstral having a slightly different version) that the filmmakers didn't feel the need to follow Wagner's opera to the letter.
