Are traditional African songs "pop music"? Is Coltrane's "Giant Steps" "pop music"? Is Tchaikovsky 5 "pop music"? They all have melodies and basic song structure. Hell, I was humming a theme to Tchaik Five just today. Songs are an innate part in human artistic culture. Pop refers to what's "popular" and made to consume, rather than to intricately listen to.

i think radiohead would probably tell you that they make pop music. the beatles and jimi were experimental to a degree but they still made pop music. Radiohead was on a major record label for years and had music videos that played on mtv. they make songs that have catchy melodies, are easy to digest and have relatively traditional song structures. To me any music that can be classified by an average listener as a song is pop music. Most people cant play MSG if they dont make pop music.

Oh c'mon, are we so "high up" on the avant-garde, free, intellectual scene that we're calling Radiohead pop music now? Some of it, granted, but to call their entire discography pop is beyond prentious.
I do like Bailey, as well as Eric Dolphy and some late Coltrane.

If it's so bad, you should try loading a gun, aiming it at your own head, and pulling the trigger. That should drown out the sound! :)

Every time I hear Bailey I want to drown out the sound, even if I resort to stamping on my own testicles and screaming.

I agreed with you until the Springsteen remark.

Every time I listen to Bailey it puts my pedestrian improvisations into perspective... he was truly the master of guitar.

popular doesn't necessarily mean good. Britney Spears is popular. And so is Fall Out Boy. |
