Throughout history new machines were always prone to breakage or failure. Look at the first jet made by the Germans at the end of WWII, many of them weren't shot down, their engines failed but the reason being they were rushing brand new technology.

How adorable! Lucy and Desi in a Ford commercial! This was when the craftmanship was solid and the makers stood behind their products-didn't need 'warranties' back then!!

..now if overrated chevy had that roof, the media would have made it mega famous. ford was where it was at back then. mabey the 80's fords weren't much but the 50-60's sure where

These cars were not "prone to failure". The mechanisms did have problems when the nut behind the wheel did not follow operating instructions, like stopping the action mid-way between up or down. These are very reliable, well engineered cars especially for 1957.

Ford has a Better Idea!!!!!!!!!

omg it takes ten thousand years for the roof to attach, it sounded like they were about to blast off.

awesome idea, although i know now why they were so prone to failure. here's what the top alone required to operate: 10 power relays 10 limit switches 4 lock motors 3 drive motors 8 circuit breakers 610 feet of electrical wire.
