I like Tae-Kwon-Do but the place I went to charged way too much for the belts and the sparing armor was too big for the my class mates and me.

Well the pros keep hands down to encourage opponent to attack.. but yeah, at my club we're always told to keep our guard up. But that's sparring without the body armour; different rules. The style differs I guess.
