everyone needs to watch stanley clarks "night school" and see where flea rates among real bassists. Dont get me wrong flea is an incredible bassists but 'ryansweeney37' is right he is not as original as people think but he still kicks ass

Flea has some skill. But then bass playing is, to me, much more about groove than about "skill" and technique. I prefer the player who can make a stiff eights pattern groove, rather than the one who can deliver most notes per second... ;P

OK...fair enough. I just think he´s highly overrated. So many truly great players are almost unknown and therefore get no credit, while Flea by many is considered a "bass master". This is a bit unfair (imho) and therefore annoys me a little... :P

haha. OK. I really thought you were talking about Larry Graham at first since I didn't read any of the other comments.
I disagree with you a little on Flea. I think he's a good, solid, and definitely an original bassist. I don't think he's one of the best out there. There's a long list of bassists who I think are more talented in technique and musicality than Flea. But I don't think that the fact that there are people who are more skilled than him makes him any less talented.

Hehe...I`m talking about FLEA! ;D Larry Graham is a whole other question!:) He´s nothing less than one of the godfathers of funk!!
bwsailer (September 4, 2008 at 5:58 pm)
Oh wait.. were you talking about Flea or Larry Graham?
bwsailer (September 4, 2008 at 5:56 pm)
how can you say he's not unique? the man developed the slap bass style. wouldn't you say that coming up with something NEW would be considered unique?
How much of Larry Graham's music are you familiar with? I can imagine someone not liking his style, but to say that he doesn't deserve to be credited as a great bassist just seems crazy to me (but all of this is subjective anyway).

OK...so ha can play the bass quite OK, like soooo many other bassists. But in no way whatsoever does he deserv credit ass being a great, unique bass player, because he simply isn´t. He´s just more well known to the general public than many.

However did anyone even come up with the notion that Flea should even be mentioned among the great bass players of the world??? All players - genius, great, good, average and bad, are in one way or another influenced by others, and very few are really totally unique. Most do not come close to the musicians they´re influenced by, some become just as good, and some even surpass their influences. But flea...he´s just a guy who happened to play in a band that happened to become famous...
