heheh
well, assuming the supernatural has helped me more knowledgable that every person who believes in the supernatural is a fucking idiot

Evecyclops,
Also, let me add, that not one instance in history has assuming the supernatural increased our knowledge or understanding of anything.
snipertak (August 19, 2008 at 2:21 pm)
Evecyclops,
Basically, hes trying to make the argument that "since god can do anything, he exists, and you just dont know it". Which is stupid and flimsy, since that can be applied to anything which has enough power to hide itself indefinately from reality.

widerangledotcom,
The textbook isnt lying. Its oversimplifying the matter so that young people can understand it better.
Sure, grade 10 textbooks could start off with complicated words, examples and experiments. But what use would that be to children whove barely entered the basic scientific curriculum?
Besides, if you arent aware, Gravity is also a lie. In every grade 10 science textbook, it states that gravity is a universal law. But it isnt.

Widerangledotcom,
No. Y0u missed my point entirely.
By your logic, if i say that "God exists, therefore this absurd theory is completely possible, contrary to all evidence", my claim would be correct no matter what.
In other words, i can easily say There are invisible aliens inside the sun, and when you ask me for evidence, i just say "well god made them there".
Seriously, please, tell me the difference between my example above, and what youre trying to do.

widerangledotcom,
No.
The reason light lingers on for about a microsecond is because the light emitted from that source is still travelling. Thus, it has a source.
No instance of light being present without a source has ever been seen or heard.
EvelcyclopS (August 19, 2008 at 1:38 pm)
"what is light?"
Photons of electromagnetic energy occuring at a frequency of approximately 300-700nanometres.
"why can't God have created light..."
Well thats not what the bible says, it says the stars were formed and then light, but in any case, we know what causes light, and it doesnt need a magic wand.
"that is perfectly logical"
perhaps in theology, where you can make up whatever the fuck you want. But a supernatural cause cannot explain a natural effect
EvelcyclopS (August 19, 2008 at 1:26 pm)
"i'm saying this, 'if God exists, He would be God, so He would be able to do this...."
this just sounds like a bunch of words strung together which have absolutely no logical meaning whatsoever.
"if i turn out [ceiling] light gets turned off, the light does not instantly disappear"
That light has still come a source, and in the femtosecond after you turn off the switch, the photons are rapidly absorbed into the walls, floor etc.
try again

"so, it's fine for textbooks to lie about things just to get kids to accept the big bang?"
Well, we only have your word to go by, with your shoddy knowledge of science, you could have easily misinterpreted the source.
But flipreverse it. Is it fair for people like Kent Hovind, who has no academic qualifications, to prech to children the fallacy that evolution is false? To teach children that the unifying theory of biology, and that scientists are all deviously incorrect?
No it isnt.
EvelcyclopS (August 19, 2008 at 1:16 pm)
"you say we formed over billions of years by random chance"
nice strawman, but this is not how evolution works, its anything but random.
"actually - a physicist isn't one to study logic. seeing as it cannot and does not exist in physics"
Can you tell me why physicists are not logical?
"do-what-ever-the-hell-you-like?"
