I think you're right. It's a good thing that Gene was picked to sing this. He was more than a singer, he was a vocalist. He was more than a vocalist, he was an artist.

If I remember, it was written by professional songwriters Dmitri Tiomkin (music) and Ned Washington (words). I think it was written specifically for the movie of the same title. Great movie, BTW. You're probably thinking of "Only Love Can Break A Heart". I think that was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Yes! He was the greatest! Very under-rated, as I prefered him to Elvis. His music is HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL. This song was from the film "Town without Pity" with Kirk Douglas and the beautiful German actress Christina Kaufmann. (Who later married Jamie Lee Curtis' dad, Tony Curtis)

It's a sad movie but good for an old movie.

God.......this song reminds me of my best friend and me when we were in high school we ran away to New London CT. ,,,,it was in the middle of winter and we were freezing so we were trying to find a car that was not locked, finaly we found one and got in, as we shivered we were looking at the tapes in the car and we came across what else but " GENE PITNEY " and i remember my friend saying " O I LOVE GENE PITNEY " too bad we could not listen to it ! the song will always remind me of that night !

I dont think any voice but Gene Pitney's could have done justice to this haunting, soulful, innocent song. The song makes me wanna dance and cry at the same time.
Viewing the slides and hearing the song at the same time made it even more haunting.

I've seen Gene play 2 times, my father was an acquaintance of his for many years. Now, is this a Burt Bacharach composition? |
