can someone give a good explanation of the lyrics??? i know that the blowing up of the chicken man refers to the killing of a philadelphia mob soldier named Philip Testa but the rest of the lyrics are unclear to me.....the "everything dies baby thats a fact, but maybe everything that dies someday comes back" and other parts of the song such as the lyrics after the chicken man and the mob (or "racket boys") fighting on the boardwalk

This song is one of the songs that got me interested in music when I was still in elementary school. Haunting lyrics.

The Chicken Man was a member of the mafia. He was assasinated by his house being blown to smithereens whilst he was in it. Very subtle not.
The song is about the opening up of Atlantic City as a gambling resort. Of course the mafia moved in despite assurances by the authority's that this would not happen.

Phanahtic, thanks for some very intersting story-behind-the-song. I had always wondered who the chicken man was. Haunting is definitely the word for this song, especially as it fades out at the end. I admire the way it faces up to the decay and failure of life but ultimately gives a message of redemption. You mention the '40s/'50s noir films; I wonder: has this song ever been used in a major motion pic? It should be! |
