Scenario 2:
I don't want to do anything nasty, just leech some Inet. I enter my own IP settings using "192.168.1.99". The router SSID/MAC gave me a clue that it would be valid. In any case, I wouldn't have to try more than 2 or 3. I know the DNS's of area ISPs, in case the router doesn't do DNS. Owners who think filtering is "secure" typically leave the config password at factory default. I could log in and make things easier for me, and make it harder for the owner to enable *REAL* security.

Scenario: I see a router from a neighboring apartment. Their router appears as an "unsecured" router with the SSID "linksys". I try to connect, but I don't get an IP. "Meh. Let's see what they're up to anyway." Open up a tool for analyzing wireless traffic and see it all... EVERYTHING.

NO. "MAC filtering" is not even slightly "secure". Traffic is un-scrambled and every bit as exposed as it would be without filtering. I can sniff and analyze your traffic with no effort at all if you are using only MAC filtering; NO CHANGE IN PROCEDURE AT ALL! You don't have to connect to the router to see wireless traffic. Furthermore, connecting to a router with MAC-filtering is TRIVIAL. Most routers simply don't assign IP addresses to unrecognized MACs. You can simply enter your own manually.

Cable might be easier but it's not feasible for everybody. Rogers Cable (here in Canada) as a 60gig limit on the mid-range and 90gig on their highend service which is pure nuts. People like you might get something "because it's easy", but for me I don't mind tinkering around and i go after the better deals.

Are you serious? Can you tell your ass from a hole in the ground?
NO it doesn't have a modem in it. It's a router...where does it say "Modem" in the description?

does this have a modem in it?

cable is soo much easier tho , we got cable recently and it took me 5 mins to plug it in and set encryption!

That guy he talks to behind the cameras sounds like a bigger turd. "MAC filtering is secure"...I hope somebody hacks into his router and steals his financial information and then steals his children.

I know that. The guy in the video makes it sounds like cable internet is the only type of service out there. |
