What he means is that freedom of speech didn't really exist until the 20th century (especially the 60's). It was in the 1st amendment, but only utilized when public movements took hold and got the justice system involved to recognize it. Before these movements, freedom of speech was the same as in other countries...only now has this country become unique (due to the activist movements).

So? I love how you mention it like its a scientifically proven evil. I guess noam, the publishing houses and stores that sell his many books are run like communes with no self-interest to make money. Why doesn't chomsky publish online for free? getting the word out is second to money making? BTW PBS does this. And MIT has an endowment of 10 billion. I guess penny drives and not corporate gifts are responsible for that. And most PBS funding is public, corporate gifts are relatively minor.

I thought feedom of speech was in the fist amendment of the Constition. I'm confused... can anyone explain why Chomsky said it was not in the Constitution?
