Child Labour

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has estimated that 218 million children between the ages of five and seventeen work in developing countries. Of these, 122.3 million children work in the Asia-Pacific region, 49.3 million work in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 5.7 million work in Latin America and the Caribbean. Most working children in rural areas are found in agriculture; many children work as domestics; urban children work in trade and services, with fewer in manufacturing and construction. Child labor ranges from four-year-olds tied to rug looms to keep them from running away, to seventeen-year-olds helping out on the family farm. In some cases, a child's work can be helpful to him or her and to the family; working and earning can be a positive experience in a child's growing up. This depends largely on the age of the child, the conditions in which the child works, and whether work prevents the child from going to school.

The money given would never be used to help these kids...some greedy CHRISTIAN groups would just pocket the funds

I agree that these poosr famalies need income from their children to survive but just come to think of it , these children are also being denied a life many their age are enjoying . More often than not , these cildren who are defined as bonded slaves, are paying off a long drawn debt and are generational labour , the amount as little as 60USD. iF some one can stop just making laws , talking and advocating and give 60USD to help these children , it would go along way .

Ditto! plus....boycott all those corporations, industries that sell the products made by these poor, enslaved, tortured children. Don't buy oriental/Indian rugs. Don't buy Hanes underwear. Don't buy any products made in these countries by these children. Not sure? Look it up on your internet or have a friend do it. If the industries and merchants start loosing money (the only thing they seem to care about) they will start treating these children more humanely, more food, pay, less hrs.& beatings

The world is a cruel and unfair place. Nobody ever said that "life is fair", nor should they. You CAN speak up! You can write, vote, donate time and money toward the cause you promote. If all of us did just a bit to make things better we would all be surprised at what could be accomplished. Don't ever think that your contribution doesn't matter!
