Is it really a democracy if whole sections of the country (most likely uneducated, low socio-economic areas)choose not to have an opinion? In my opinion, compulsory voting ensures that everyone gets their say, and no-one is left out...and besides, if you really are a conscientious objector, you can always choose to place a dud vote that won't be counted.

If voting isn't compulsory in a decomcracy then the elected representatives don't truly represent the people. To live in a "free" and democratic society doesn't mean taking civic life as it's dealt to you. A society must remain vigilent and hold its representatives to account. Many countries have voluntary democracy and a very low voter turnout means they often get a government the majority doesn't want, then they complain.

Its interesting how liberalism comes across differently in different countries. In Australia its conservative, in the UK, its often seen as centre-left, in Russia, its neo-right.
