Republican or democrat, whichever way, it's identity to say what the majority of the population wants, then events or movements can be created to "persuade" the people in and out of power to move toward certain goals. It's essentially an illusion of choice.

Of course the media is "controlled" (and I say that loosely), but so is eveyone to an extent because we as a society live by certain rules & laws.
