The music is by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. If you like this version, which I agree is nice, have a listen to Paul Robeson singing it. There is just so much emotion in it. I find it amazing that someone who had had no experience of slavery could write such a heartfelt lament.

What a brilliant cover of this piece. Never knew about it until the magic of You Tube. Thanks for the posting and RIP Mr. Croce.

This song was from the musical movie Showboat. If you like musicals you will love this movie.

Thanks so much for posting this beautiful rendition of every man's song. I still cry when I remember where I was when I heard that Big Jim Croce was gone. He was the greatest

derekrk - Jim was not a white man, he was one of the first half & half artists to attempt to break through. It was incredibly hard for him as the world wasn't as accepting of interracial relationships and children back then.... I am just going off what my dad told me, I was born in 1977 and was only able to enjoy Jim on his record collection when I was growing up.

It doesn't matter how much it sounds like one because IT IS NOT ONE and how do you know if he would have sung the original song?!? WHERE YOU AND CROCE BEST BUDS!?! DID YOU KNOW HIS PERSONALITY!?! NO YOU DIDN'T SO YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY WHAT HE WOULD HAVE SUNG AND WHAT HE WOULDN'T HAVE SUNG SO JUST SHUT YOUR MOUTH>:[
