why is everyone so dedicated to either AMD or intel? the way I see it is that sometimes AMD is better, and sometimes intel is better, I buy them both whichever happens to be better at the time.

This is a common practice in VLSI engineering. Intel does it to their Core 2... disable the defective cache and make then into Pentium Dual Core, NV does it with their GPU, disabling some pipes and make them into lower end parts. And the list goes on. A larger silicon will always be getting lower yield, so what better way to make more money than closeing the defective parts and sell them.
