Great live performance the Jazz giant and legendary Paul Desmond & Dave Brubeck

Paul Desmond had a *complete* technical command of his instrument - a virtuoso of the very highest order. Instead of showing his technique as technique - how fast can we play Donna Lee? - he *used* it to make music.
Playing a lot of notes is easy. Playing every note perfectly is hard.
Paul Desmond = The Bomb.

Joe Morello cracks me up at 35 seconds with his "air drums" and Paul follows with a musical joke as he begins to play. I love the humor and interaction between this legendary quartet. Thanks for posting!

He would rate at the very top, along with Charlie Parker, Art Pepper, Cannonball Adderley.
Different styles but all tops.

it all depends on what we talk about
desmond was no technical virtuoso or a melodically complex player
but his sound, tone, and his ideas, his patterns that he made, his music is so coherent, it fits the whole way through
but again
parker wouldn't fit here
desmond wouldn't fit there

I've never heard any other alto player with a more beautiful tone. Seriously.
His phrasing is also pure poetry (in my opinion).

I'm a guitarist - but I've heard all my life that Paul has the tone sax players try to emulate. |
