Well, the movie played in Japan..but it was looked at as really "fantasy"?, I mean, it's definitely not realistic in Japanese standards, but it has beautiful imagery and was enjoyed by many, despite the fact..

Ziyi is actually Korean, which caused a huge scandal in Japan. I think the may have boycotted the movie, although I am unsure...

I watched the special on the dvd, but it's quite long ago, and I don't remeber very much of it; just that they made the faces of the Geishas less white than it is in reality. thx for the information! I should watch the special again ;)

No, I think they got that bit fine.. If you get a chance, watch the making-of Memoirs of a Geisha, you'll see they did little things to "spice" up the wardrobe and makeup for American audiance. Such as, the collar of the kimono droops down more than it does in real life, and the whole kimono is one length without being folded over. Also, the red lips stick covers the whole mouth. There are other little cutural things and wardrobe choices like that, both those stood out to me just now...

I wish they had made the costumes more realistic... but everything's beautiful nonetheless.
