I can't recall the precise quote, but it was something to the effect of "you can't go playing like a gorilla and look like a librarian".
It struck me as the sort of comment which avoided substantive criticism of a more prolific player (Peart) while speaking to Aldridge's jealousy and self image insecurities.
I can't be sure, but reading the MD piece, it struck me that way.

Most of Tommy's sound in this vid is coming from his double kicks, not what he's playing on the toms and snare. As I said before, Tommy's a great drummer but IMO he doesn't have the power intensity that Bonham had, and certainly not specifically playing with his hands. I love ZTommy's regular playing, but his hand playing is very unmusical and overcompensated sound-wise by the kicks. Listen and watch and you'll see what I mean. |
