I just think it's great that Phil can inspire such controversy these years later. Thanks Phil.

The original post (deleted) to which I replied in the first post was a juvenile, callous reference to Ochs' suicide. But I'm not sure what you're getting at here. There are two points of view: 1. War is a necessary evil and principled men fight and sometimes die in war. 2. War is not a solution to anything and principled artists -- including one who was "just a singer" -- can use their craft to promote that view.

Principles are subjective. Some men died for their principles. Ochs was just a singer.

Forty years later we are right back in the situation that inspired this song...we never learn

if you're talking about me, then I'm sorry, that bible verse below made me realize, again, that fighting gets nothing. also, I didn't search for this song. my friend's dad showed it to me against my will really... (he's really liberal, but really nice, so I didn't want to hurt his feelings)

you're right, I should rethink my words alaskandan80. thank you.

ntensely disappointed by his lack of commercial success and unable to write new songs, Ochs was also haunted by bipolar disorder and an alternate personality under the drunken, chaotic persona John Butler Train. After spiralling downward in a long stretch of erratic, self-destructive behavior, Phil Ochs hanged himself on April 9, 1976 at his sister's home in Far Rockaway, New York

Sigh, why must there ALWAYS be a fight--especially from two people who sought out this specific site and song?! STOP IT! No one else cares, so take your battle to the privacy of email and spare the rest of us from ya'lls redundant rhetoric. Is it SO HARD to simply enjoy a song?! areyoustillalive--I am, but Phil isn't. He commited suicide (gun) in 1963 or 64--I'm not exactly sure
