They aren't converting the waste itself to fissile material. Rather they are bombarding a mass of nonfissile (by thermal neutrons)U238 with fast neutrons (that occur naturally) during the operation of a nuclear reactor. The U238 then undergoes two subsequent beta decays and emerges as Pu-239. Essentially, it doesn't "cost" anything extra to breed more fuel, as opposed to just running the reactor. It's almost like getting something for nothing. And, no this does not violate the 2nd law!

your a crazy conspiracy theorist, to convert nuclear waste to plutonium it would take energy to convert it back into something thats fissionable. But then again i am a hypocrite as i am a conspiracy theorist myself and i wouldn't put it past green groups to do anything that radical

That actually depends, I mean if a nuclear bomb is dropped and lots of dust is kicked up it will be hard to recover. BUT the "harmful nuclear waste" can be recycled into plutonium, something green organizations DON'T want you to know. Especially in nuclear reactors. Common uses of nuclear bombs "air burst" cause minimal to none long term fallout. It is only when it is detenated on the ground when you see the long term radioactive effects.

I agree. Also there is antimatter, which can destroy anything it comes in contact with. It contains great power but some people made it for a bomb instead of fuel source because they still don't know how to make it an energy source. Nuclear power may also be great but after it has no energy, there is harmful nuclear waste.
