Eh, Gibraltar wasn't annexed it was given to Britain as a result of the Spanish war of succession and the majority of people there are strongly pro-british. And if it were returned to Spanish hands should it not be then returned to Morroco who had held it previously? You really can't 'return' a territory such as Gibraltar due to the vast ammount of previous owners. Tbh I think the northern ireland situation should simply be democratically decided like most other former territories.

Here's to you as well, dokgolf! I've never been to Belfast or Derry, though I do have friends from Omagh and Dublin so I try to maintain a balanced view. I was referring to my perception of majority opinion today, not to a suppressed minority nor the historical detail which is totally different. What the hell, Spike was just a realy funny guy who is sorely missed.

returned to the countries that had soverignty over these places before the British Empire annexed them and then forcibly displaced the native peoples. If you think the vast majority in Northern Ireland are quite happy with the situation as it stands, I suggest you do some research in the Creggan in Derry or the Divis flats in Belfast. Incidently, I agree wholeheartedly with your point about ridiculing stereotypes. "Top o the mornin to ya"!

Returned to whom? I think you'll find that most of the people actually resident in those three places as opposed to stirring things from the outside are quite happy with the situation as it is. Anyway, my point (as was Spike's) is about ridiculing stereotypes, not about defending the rights and wrongs of politics which are never straightforward.

A fair comment, Leveler, but I was responding to an earlier remark about the English (not the British) once owning half the world. I agree that Spike is poking fun at his parent's people to be pedantic, but more importantly he is brilliantly sending up the ridiculous stereotypical view of the Irish held by many English people and others besides. That's what I find so hilarious.
