Grand Theft Congo - DRC

July 2005 The major problem facing Africa is corruption and control of resources. In the DRC, the military is stealing minerals to sell to Western companies. At a remote mine in central DRC, workers with torches and pick axes hack at the ruddy earth. They are mining cassiterite, a mineral vital in the production of laptops and mobile phones. But dispersed among the miners are Congolese Government troops -- in plain clothes for the camera -- literally forcing most workers to work at gunpoint. 'The soldiers always steal everything. They even come to shoot people down the mineshafts,' complains Regina Maponda. Western greed for cassiterite is fuelling the boom -- at an airfield near the mine, soldiers jealously guard their loot as it makes it way to Japan and the West. Conflict mining is a curse, and it is difficult to see what the G8 leaders can do.

Money does not solve the problem, money is the problem! I would like to know how much money is donated to Africa each year and you would probably see that 99 % of it goes in the governments corrupt pockets. Money is just paper. Ignorance and greed is what causes poverty.

the strength of a democracy comes from it's laws. with out laws governing everyone you get the anarchy you have here. who's building the state? the state should be controlling all mines until it's developed

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. - The Declaration of Independence, by Thomas Jefferson Let all the peoples of the earth take heed of this eternal document. Tyranny must be stopped. Let everyone know the enemy. It is anyone who wants to enslave mankind. The weapons in this war are knowledge and truth.

damarez- the evil of slavery ended long before anyone commenting here was even born so it is hardly the key explanation for a modern conflict. And no, I do not think it is 'their' fault. It is not the fault of the thousands of women arbitralily raped or the child soldiers who are forced to fight. It is the fault of the sadist leaders of the tribal militias hellbent on wiping each other off the face of the earth. The people to blame are the Joseph Kony's of this world. You sound like Mugabe.
