Many slums in Calcuta still have this kludgy look in a less cyberpunk way: if technologies keeps coming in India faster than social development, these places might very well look like that in future decades.
Search "Calcutta slum" on google image, there are some interesting pictures.

wow! Just stumbled across an article about this place today. So fascinating. Would have really liked to explore the inside of this city. Seems I'm just a little to late. No doubt we shouldn't "cry", if people are getting better living conditions, but I do feel a little sad, that such a place doesn't exists anymore :(
