Stephen Sondheim talks about the writing(from the Piano at home),of "Epiphany" from Sweeney Todd.This was from a BBC Southbank show special about the musical done in 1980,preceding the arrival of the show in London.The London cast includes Dennis Quilley as Todd,and Shelia Hancock as Lovett.The original Director Hal Prince is on hand as well.Rare.

An extra bit of Sondheim genius... well, this could be blatantly obvious but... the "Dies Irae" is also "the Ballad of Sweeney Todd".

He managed to slip in the 'dies irae' gregorian chant in that chord progression right after the "but not for long" line. Genius!
