Buran was an awesome spacecraft and better than the American shuttle in pretty much every way; but it was absolutely a copy. Design work on the Buran began in the 70's as a response to the shuttle which was conceived in the 60's. I don't think they stole any plans, though. Just designed it along similar lines (i.e. a copy).

Ejection seats were fitted to Columbia for her first few flights but were subsequently dis-armed them removed once they started flying more than the Commander Pilot 'cos if anything went that wrong, the flight crew refused to punch out leave anyone behind in the Orbiter

We won't get to see another shuttle after the Rockwell ones are gone (in the near future anyway, who knows what the future may bring)- NASA are going back to expendable BDB's (Big Dumb Boosters) capsules for man-rated transports

the soviets were the undisputed champions of brainwashing. And what ever happened to that whole soviet nuclear energy deal?.... Oh! That's right, the worst nuclear disaster in human history. And what happened to that lovely communist state? Of course! the soviet economy collapsed, because it was not capitalist. The facts are there. Brainwashing's got nothing to do with it. Here in america we have freedom of thought, and freedom of choice, and ownership. So go be shorn sheep.

Wow you guys are very ignorant in history must be product of brainwashing.

From my point of view the Buran-Energia, tho perhaps a ripoff from NASA, is a great update to the whole idea. Having a lifting device that is completely reuseable, being able to lift over 100tonnes into orbit and having an unmanned shuttle on top.. Well that sounds superb, let's go to mars allready. Well if I remember correctly NASA and ESA have set a 100ton requirement on the lifting device, here you have one and I bet it's got low rates since its been sitting there doing nothing :)

To all who think that Russia stole design from NASA. Learn HISTORY.Buran-Energia was designed long before NASA shuttle appeared...

at that time, they couldnt even figure out how to run a fuckin tractor. And they were trying to use nuclear power. I say, master the former, before the latter. O well, moral of the story, capitalism is the way to go.

because the russians stole the friggin design. i guess they couldnt design one on their own that worked, like their crap cars.

That's no knock against the Soviets who ably made use of the design, but the fact remains that most of it is an American design right down to the ejection seats which do not appear in the production NASA design.
