You raise some interesting points. Napoleon lost at Waterloo because, among other things, he insisted on advancing his troops in column, which left them out-gunned by the British lines. I think the correct pronunciation is "cole-nel" which gets Anglicised to "core-nel". A bit like the fact that you're well fit in your video, but in the banner at the top of the page, you look like Paris Hilton- it's a horrible corruption!
