Really cool, but funny - it's really Miles band here, w/out Miles - not a Coltrane session - the way they play the Miles arrangement - even going into the "break tune" - blues at a slower tempo...I wonder how this came about?

Coltrane and Getz together with Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. This most amazing, but the problem with these postings is no information is given along with the videos. When, Where, and Why are left out; thankfully, we always know the Who.

Walkin is not a Carpenters song. It was composed by Richard Carpenter, is incorrectly credited to Miles Davis, who recorded the tune back in 1954.

I had the chance to talk to Jimmy Cobb for a while about Wynton and he told me that sometimes people (probably he meant stupid people with no ears) would not take Wynton Kelly as seriously as other piano players because he sometimes lifted the 5th finger of his right hand. You can see him do this around minute 2.13, especially when he does descending phrases. I was always wondering what Jimmy Cobb meant by that and it's interesting to finally be able to see it on this video.

Actually, Richard Carpenter was a very good song writer who wrote You Can Depend On Me and a few others for Louis Armstrong annd earl Hines. He was Lester Young's manager and was probably the manager of the Gene Ammons-Sonny Stitt band when they recorded the first version of Walkin' (it was called "Gravy". He may not have written it, but it was common practice for bandleaders and managers to take royalties from songs they got recorded. Miles himself did it many times.

Richard Carpenter is "credited" as composer but it is not the brother Karen Carpenter of the Carpenters. He was a manager of many jazz artists notorius for stealing the publishing rights and composition credit of jazz artist in need of money.
