One of the many things I love about this movie is that it--in a sense--occurs post-mortum. Schmidt says it best himself. "Soon I will be dead." He says, to paraphrase, Maybe I'll die in twenty years, maybe tomorrow. It doesn't matter. But in the end love breaks through the resignation for just a moment.

How was it underrated? Nicholson was nominated for best actor for this role.

This is the saddest ending ever, Nicholson's tears seem real. The way his selfishness is brought down to earth with a great thud as he reads this boy's genuine open and honest words for the first time, it is very moving. To be included in Ndugu's picture, to be in his thoughts and the fact that Schmidt is accepted regardless....

can you put Ndugu's letter up please. For me thats the most moving scene of the film.
