he made that comment in one of his books i forget which one ? you should really check out some of jeff's videos just click my name......i love coltrane....Frank was the master of compostion my favorite solo of his is watermelon in easter hay.

when did frank say that? i'd like to know so i could read up on it. and just because frank regarded jeff beck so highly doesn't make him a better guitarist. thats frank's opinion. frank often criticized and undermined his own guitar playing. he was modest i theat aspect. also, i should have said that frank zappa was a better improviser than beck and vai. to me frank was the john coltrane of guitar.

i agree and disagree.....i don't think Beck can be learned as either......you can learn a song but not an inflection or tone..Zappa was a very abstract player yet if you listen closely no matter how far he wondered in a solo there was always a "tie" to the main theme.....i haven't ever seen ANYONE else be able to do that....as for Beck ? to understand Zappa's comment i think you just need to view a few videos on here like somewhere over the rainbow....drown in my own tears..FZ-JB BOTH MONSTERS.

I've often wondered at Frank's quote about Beck being 'more fluid' than him - Vai is a total monster no question - I think FZ was just humble and unpretentious - but his solos are, like, ok, not pyrotechnic stuff but totally mesmerising and UNLEARNABLE which both Vai and Beck are. It's not just his COMPOSITION - it's the really weird way he had of IMPROVISATION - its so speech inflected its unrepeatable and just says so much which others can't for all their skill.

i like that face that frank can improv like no other. i mean anyone can memorize a sweet guitar solo and practice it over and over. just look at these 8 year old kids that can play EVH and stuff. it really comes down to the solos you make up on the spot.

p.s. Jeff Beck also played several years with 2 Ex Zappa DRUMMERS Bozzio and Coliuta Steve Vai another Zappa alumni is another monster on guitar.....I truely believe both these guys are better guitar players then frank but aren't even in his league for writting songs.
