Sometimes misery and the "underbelly of life" is reality. And that's beautiful to me...

Hey, I've watched both videos many times, and I can tell you, as someone who LOVES MUSIC, I actually appreciate both versions of the song. Tom's original is absolutely brilliant, period, but I also like Rod's version which is more melodic, easier to sing along to. Yes, it's very mainstream, but that's ok.

I donb't understand why all these Tom Waits fans are here - without great singers lyrics are just poems. What's so amazing about writing about the undrbelly of life ? Give me a musician who celebrates life not just misery.

Well, this song is nice, but it's just a pity cover, Tom's song is waaaaaaay better. Also Tom is way above Rod Stewart...

Rod Stewart sucked the life out of this song. Everything that made Wait's recording original, like his raspy voice, his nervous delivery of the lyrics, and the energetic rock arrangement has been replaced by something conventional and mediocre. Even the music video seems corny compared to Wait's noir style video. I'm not opposed to covers. I don't have a deep hatred of Rod Stewart. But this cover is among the worst I've seen.

Iggy Pop said his biggest influence was the Faces ( you probably don't know but Rod fronted the Faces).Btw Tom Waits is a poet, not a singer - I want poetry, I can read it.

wow you know zilch about music...punk? metal? nope. Rod Stewart is mediocre compared(hell Rod sucks in general) Tom Waits, when has someone like Rod ever had such primal deep obssesions with someone like the protag in this song? Tom Waits on the other hand brings honesty and emotion to this song its raw and sad and desperate...IGGY POP IFLUENCED PUNK MUSIC!

Doesn't sound rushed to me.
