This is when they were the Beatles of college radio. I was at their first in-store appearance in Carbondale, Illinois in 1982. I had just bought the record (Chronic Town) because the ad for it in Trouser Press had that gargoyle that I thought was so cool. My band at the time learned Gardening at Night and Boxcars, which we were playing when I met them in Plaza Racords.
