Robert Wyatt Shipbuilding (C.Langer / E.Costello) 1982 Robert Wyatt (vocal) Clive Langer (organ) Steve Nieve (piano) Mark Bedford (double-bass) Martin Hughes (drums) Elvis Costello (backing vocals) ROUGH TRADE (RT115T) EP Is it worth it? A new winter coat and shoes for the wife And a bicycle on the boy's birthday It's just a rumour that was spread around town By the women and children Soon we'll be shipbuilding....... Well I ask you The boy said "Dad they're going to take me to task, but I'll be back by Christmas" It's just a rumour that was spread around town Somebody said that someone got filled in For saying that people get killed in The result of this shipbuilding With all the will in the world Diving for dear life When we could be diving for pearls It's just a rumour that was spread around town A telegram or a picture postcard Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards And notifying the next of kin Once again It's all we're skilled in We will be shipbuilding........ With all the will in the world Diving for dear life When we could be diving for pearls.

Beautiful track, first version I knew came from Elvis Costello's album Punch the clock. Nice to see Mark Bedford from Madness play the bass, suppose he's as underrated as Robert Wyatt. I think I read once that Clive Langer, who produced Madness, Costello, Dexy's Midnight Runners etc., wrote the music for this song. Thanks for putting this video up!

This is a brilliant song. I first came across it when Hue & Cry covered it.

I can't believe he doesn't mention his Alifie in this.

Robert Wyatt is so underrated. Awesome singer and arranger. His new album is pretty bad ass too, "Comicopera."
