And now that he's in jail I think everybody tonight at ease."][Notes:Mug shot]Authorities have named Nicholas Sheley (SHEE'-lee) a suspect in four killings in Illinois and two in Missouri. [Notes:Dateline: Granite City, Illinois]He was arrested Tuesday night smoking outside this bar. [Notes:Dateline: Sterling, Illinois] Once the news reached his hometown of Sterling ... Residents say they were relieved. [Notes:SOT Terra Staton, Sterling, Ill. Resident: "It's been going around on phones. Everybody's text messaging everybody his picture of his arrest. So like I said it's nothing but a big relief."][Notes:Dateline: Festes, Missouri]In less than a week ... the 28-year-old ex-convict is accused of roaming communities in Illinois and Missouri and .... killing eight people.Police discovered two of Sheley's victims here ... At a gas station in the small town of Festes. [Notes:SOT: Chip Compton, Festes Gas Station Owner: "I've never seen anything like this before. Double homicide ... And it's kind of shocking that it's on my property."]Compton called police after a woman walking her dog saw what she thought was a human foot. [Notes:SOT: Chip Compton, Festes Gas Station Owner: "I walked back here and I seen the guy's foot right there in that low spot. I see he had sandals on . His foot was all bloody and at that time I walked around the dumpster and I discovered that there was actually a male and a female and there were both pretty much bloody from head to tow."] Police say all his victims were killed by blunt force trauma to the head. ... Two stuffed into the trunk of his car ... [Notes:SOT: Chip Compton, Festes Gas Station Owner: "As you can see this blood trail ... right here where these blood dripping are this is where he backed a truck up and he dragged the bodies along right through here .. is where he took them around to the side of the dumpster. Here's where he unloaded them right here."]Authorities say they don't know what might have motivated Sheley to go on his alleged killing rampage.... but they said one possibility is that it was fueled by drugs.Sheley has an extensive criminal history including aggravated robbery and assault.He's being held near St. Louis until authorities from western Illinois can pick him up. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****)
