If music is not what you hear, the results are craps like this. You can blow raspberries with a trombone and explain the reasons why they should be consederd art...
Something does not work...

No, actually music is NOT just "what you hear" in my opinion. As with any art, the emotional and intellectual ramifications of the art are just as important as the art in its sort of "uni-sensual" first layer of meaning, which you so clearly observed yet cannot seem to transcend into the things i just mentioned. I don't see how you can separate the meaning behind the notes from the notes themselves.

I like it.
It's interesting to see just how many different ways people have played this piece. Although, I have to admit, the full clown costume is a new one to me!
Great playing.

I'm never quite sure how to react to Berio.

Too much extra-musical talks.
Music is what you hear, not the lucubrations before it.

This piece is supposed to be a little ridiculous. The actual clown this piece was based off of had particular meaning for him--he said that when he performed, you didn't know whether to laugh or to weep. The techniques like clicking the mute against the instrument are kind of humorous in their gesture but at the same time very eerie. just like the clown himself. Just because its a little crazy doesn't mean its crap!

I like the interpretation of the performer.

Berio, rest in peace, you and your senseless music. |
