I whould call this more hmmm yea like mastodon thats what they sound like. Lables are a nessery evil but let not get to the sub-lable debate. lol jk but u guys all kinda right =p

That's a pretty good description this hybrid genre. In addition to their strange time signatures and long instrumental interludes, there is direct jazz influence in the drumming. That's one reason why Mastodon is one of the best heavy metal bands out there, Brann Dailor doesn't use blastbeats and double bass as a crutch. The drums are featured on their own, not as backup. Their songs have tons of creative, complex, and very frequent fills, and they just rock.

You wouldn't be too far off, Mastodon does have a pretty progressive metalish sound.
