Amazing that calling a nigger a nigger would generate such controversy.

exactly, its not so much the word as what it means, its connotations. a word is just a word, but the meaning behind "nigger" makes it special. black people use it with each other because (im guessing here) it symbolises a bond that other ethnicities cant reproduce; they suffered together, its about empathising with each others position (which white people, no matter how kind, knowledgable, sensitive, etc, can NEVER understand). in time i believe itll change, but for now just give em their word.

Ironic, because millions of black people call EACH OTHER the n-word jokingly and don't give a crap about it, despite the fact of how offensive and degrading the term is to their own ethnicity. But when a white person or ANYONE who is not black calls them the n-word, even in a joking manner as black people often do with each other, there is immediately a judging of one's skin color. That's also a double standard. If the word is degrading to your own ethnicity why toss it around so carelessly?

im white, but just thought i should clear up these so-called "double-standards" about the word "nigger" compared to the word "cracker". the reason "nigger" is different is because it embodies the viewpoint of white people 150 years ago, when black people were slaves and were treated like shit. this ACTUALLY happened, and therefore this word conjures up painful and intolerant memories for blacks. the word "cracker" means biscuit and has no connotations of hate/intolerance/etc, ergo not offensive.

Yep.
If every word that offended someone was outlawed, we'd have to resort to grunting and body language because someone is ALWAYS Butthurt about something.
