He uses it to stop the strings above the nut reverberating; which is especially prominent after harmonic-y stacatto chord attacks.

People are so stupid: The bandana he uses is to absorb vibrations that can distort the sound quality of the recording. It doesn't make a huge difference but when you're trying to make it sound as clear as possible it can make a difference, especially with how much he uses harmonics. Clearly everything he does to the guitar has a purpose, he's amazing. Shut up and listen.

do you know the reason for the bandana? he said in one of his videos it was to keep a hamonic noise caused by the strings between the tuning heads and where they meet the fret board hushed.but in this case i think he wanted that added effect not to mention a pick up change what do ya'll think
