Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a rocket. Stuck his finger up his ass, and found a piece of chocolate!!

Look up George M Cohan on You-Tube. There is a few clips of him from "The Phantom President" Cohan' only movie

Have you heard the real George M. Cohan? If so, where?

One of the all-time BEST numbers from any movie musical! I never tire of watching this. James Cagney is magnificent and more than deserved the Oscar he won for this film.

This is one of the best scenes ever filmed in musical comedy. Cagney's body language is superb. Note he is very "street-wise" New York circa 1930's, not smooth and "New York society/Hollywood" like Astaire and (later) Gene Kelly.
Count the cuts in the "Yankee Doodle" sequence (when Cagney is dancing). I counted four. This means that all the performers had to be on perfect timing, not a second too fast or slow---or everyone in the shot would have to do the seqment from the previous cut. |
