I also find it interesting, that it was just by coincidence that the band started. Ray met Jim at Venice Beach one day. When he was at college he was a lot chubbier. apparently he weighed 140 pounds and was almost six feet tall. Ray Manzarek noted that he looked like the David Statue, by Michael Angelo. Which is very true. If you watch the Ed Sullivan performance of Light My Fire, at the very end, he poses purposefully like the statue.
