It's a musical.

It's a musical. There are lots of debates about what the difference between an opera and a musical is, but it is generally regarded that it has nothing to do with what is spoken and what is sung. The Magic Flute has a ton of spoken dialogue, but is it a musical? Would Evita be considered an opera for the lack of spoken dialogue? No. Again, it's disputed, but Les Mis is not an opera.

Is the Marius sick or something?

I live in NYC and have seen Les Miz over 10 times. David Bryant as Marius in this original cast was one of the best acted Marius' I have ever seen. True, his voice was shaky in this scene but he was fine in the theater when I saw him in the role a few times. And, yes, ONE DAY MORE is one of my favorite scenes of all time. I could watch this scene int he theater every night
