Well, we West Berliners could not go to East Berlin, we lived inside the wall and switching back and forth like you could is so amazing...

I am a Berliner, married 72 a tec searge who ran a radar shift with the 6912th at TCA. I was considered a security risk by Kirst who was in charge of TCA. He catapulted us to Fort Devens, Mass. There I was so homesick that I demanded my hubby get out of service after 12 years to get back to Germany. Oh well....

I just took all the movies I had and some photos and did the best I could with them. I was with Det 3, 7350 ABG and then 1946 Comm Sq. I worked with the 6912th but don't know the refridgerator sq or Major Kirst. I knew Oscar Farrell, David Bumsted, Major Hebert, Gail Halvorsen (the candy bomber), Dex Rogers, John Ledgard, and others I can't recall now. The weather officer had a real hot wife name Carol but I can't remember his name. When were you there and where did you work and live?

What a strange assortement of impressions of east and west. Were you of the 6912th or the refridgerator squadron? Was Major Kirst still your boss? 5*

My Dad was stationed in Berlin 1956-59 where he met my Mom. Thanks for showing all the pics...reminds me of my many trips there.

Hr Hess was still living at Spandau at that time. Sad, wish they never torn down the wall. It was an interesting site. Should have kept it like it was today... 1961-1989 RIP :-(

The video of East Berlin was taken during a special tour for military assigned to Berlin. It was not easy to cross the checkpoints. We has special paperwork, flag orders, to allow occupation allies to cross the divided city.

That's very interesting. Thank you for sharing.
But I'd like to know some more about Berlin...How did you manage to visit both east and west when the city was divided? Could you easily cross the checkpoints if you were living in the west? I thought it was extremely rare to cross them

I was in Berlin with my mom in 1972 and I remember the random walls still left standing from the war.
We didnt see many of the sites that you did relating to the war (I'm sure that my mom did not want to relive) so this was especially interesting. thanks so much for posting |
