Just to clarify the CTC (McAlpine) scheme is not 'sponsored'. CTC provide the cadet with a training bond (the money) repayable by the airline (by giving the cadet a low salary).
Cadets are only hooked up to the airline at the end of the course when they reach the holding pool.

Self sponsorship is beginning to become the only likely method of flying through the ratings onto ATPL.
Many Airlines are recruiting qualified or type rating pilots or those with an ATPL but no type rating.
Many of the lucky ones who train through sponsorship such as McAlpine usually pay back the training through payment, a deduced salary.

The only way into BA as a cadet entry pilot at the moment is via the Self Sponsored Pilot scheme (SSP).

The old BA cadet pilot program has been closed since 911. They are however looking into launching a part sponsored cadet training program soon.

British Airways don't have cadet pilot program?

Yeah, I've done a lot of research into flight training over the past couple of years. I'm just planning on the basis of not getting a sponsorship at the moment (although I'm still going to try!) - I think it's best to plan on net getting it, then get it, rather than the other way round (and be very disappointed!) - The loan goes up to £60k then with a cadet scheme doesn't it?

I dont know if you know, but some airlines are starting sponsored cadet schemes, where they pay ~£30K of the fees, so with the 50K loan you'll be fully supported. The airlines will also pay for the type rating; like flybe. I know my airline is "interested" in starting a scheme like this soon. Mark

Yeah, I know about the type rating and the extra costs, it's just this £25,000-£30,000 that's bugging me - and it's hard to get a loan at all for modular so the situation is pretty bad either way! thanks anyway

Hi, You should budget for around £80,000. That will get you through the course ok. However if you go to an airline where you have to pay for type rating, that will cost extra ~£25000; however you can get a loan for this ontop of the HSBC 50k I believe. The extra £30k for the crse, ontop of the loan will have to come from savings or a rich family member...

I must say... fantastic!!
I am (hopefully!) going to be joining OAT at the end of next year after my A-levels. Would you mind just clearing one thing up for me though? The training + living costs etc. is about £70,000-£75,000 - If the HSBC loan is £50,000, short of a CDL, where does the rest come from?!?
Thanks! |
