My Dad took me to see this show! What a treat! This dance scene is going down in history as one of my all time favourites.

You're looking too deep. The umbrella used in the show is similar to what many older black women used when baptismals and church revivals where held outside during hot summers in the South. Back in the day, people got baptized at the local river or pond.

Question, a friend and I are debating whether or not the umbrella used in this particular show is intended to sorta resemble a jellyfish?

Wade the Water is considered a spiritual.
"The most important direct predecessor of the blues was the spiritual, a form of religious song with its roots in the camp meetings of the Great Awakening of the early 19th century."
