In short the death of Korolev was the primary cause of the failure of the Soviet lunar program. He would have pushed for the hardware needed to make the N1 work such as a static test stand for the first stage. Though the US is botching it's second attempt at the moon with the awful Ares rockets esp Ares I.

The N1 was a stupid design. Too many engines. I'm glad Korolev was not alive to see its failure. Anyway comrade - at least you admit america went to the moon. I know many russian who think it was a hoax.
