it's always best to leave historians to debate whatever needs to be settled in any historical event. but one thing is sure, the more we assert people's differences (race, ethnicity, religion) the more we'll never find the truth. it's not us and they, it's "we".

The Norman presence was totally superficial, and even today a strong Anglo-Saxon legacy can be found in English Culture and Society.

in all of EUROPE!

I think the Normans and all that fought with them WERE SHIT!! and i swear to you i have NO respect, NO homage for the Normans, Vikings, or their ALLIES THE FRENCH!!! I will never acknowledge them as victors, and i will tell you the English identity was developed and up and running way before these wankers appeared. Remember while the rest of Europe was tied to latin, England was conducting its own affairs in its own language. With its centralized bureaucracy, England became FIRST true nation

Name me one example of English destroying one of their own English villages on the run up to Hastings? Name one. In France there was Mortimer and many more besides. Vikings attacked the English villages and the Normans took manificent pride and joy in the destruction and massacres of women and children of English villages on the lead up to Hastings, they would rape then cut the throats of the women, and grab babys by the ankles and have competitions who could throw the furtherest.

Lol, there were feuds in England in the early twelfth century, and Englishman killed Englishman. Now, was any of these offending parties LESS English? The Normans were certainly French by the time of 1066. That's what they called themselves, at least. Also, as for the Normans' "Viking beliefs" they lost those within a generation of settling Normandy. The Normans who won the Battle of Hastings WERE French, and not Normans.

but it never worked as they continued attacking French villages after they were given Normandy. Talking of ACCOUNTS why is it well versed in the Saxon chronicles that at Hastings Normans fought in the centre. Flanders soldiers were on the right flank. Bretons and FRENCH on the left. I rest my case.
AngloSaxonBastart (October 4, 2008 at 2:59 pm)
So what are you saying the French won at Hastings? Why hasnt History acknowledged you Wil? As i said before the Fueds in France were heavy, and Normans were Normans, just like a Jew is a Jew. Normans attacked and killed many FRENCH villages, which makes a STUPIDITY out of your claims that they were French and totally divorced from their Viking background and beliefs. Do you know why the vikings got Normandy? It was to calm them, and please them so they wouldnt attack any more French villages.

The Vikings who settled in Normandy were FOUR generations removed from the ones who fought at Hastings! William was Rollo's great-grandson! Now, if a Dane or Norwegian settles in France, and adapts to the French culture-will their great-grandchild be French, or Norse? Also, in EVERY SINGLE ACCOUNT of the Battle of Hastings, the Normans REFER TO THEMSELVES AS FRENCH! They call themselves "Frenchmen". That's no lie-look it up.

Its important to remember that the Norman was very much like the Jew. Although they emalgulated its important to remember they had and kept their own Cultures handed down from father to son, traditions, religon, beliefs, Language also and identity right to the 1200s. And if they were French as you say why did many of them never return to Normandy after Hastings? Bottom line is Hastings was Norman Victory, and will always be known in History as such.
